Mount Usher Pond

Mount Usher Pond

The colours of Autumn as seen on a visit to Mount Usher Gardens and Arboretum in County Wicklow on October 31 2010. [ LH160 ]

Laid out along the banks of the River Vartry and in the village of Ashford, Mount Usher has been designed after the style of William Robinson, the influential and brilliant Irish garden designer. Robinson believed in natural gardens, as opposed to the formal approach of those who preceded him. Trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants have been introduced from all parts of the world and are planted in harmony with woodland and shade loving plants. Like all the great gardens of Ireland, Mount Usher offers varying pleasures at different seasons of the year. Rhododendrons in Spring, a blaze of Summer colour and the wistful tints of Autumn (which I have tried to capture in the posted shots), all elegantly set off by the crystal waters of the river Vartry. Mount Usher is situated in Ashford Co. Wicklow, off the main Dublin to Rosslare road (M11/N11). The Gardens can be reached from Dublin (50 km) in under an hour.
